Root, root for the home team

Saturday was NYRR Day at Shea Stadium. NYRR offered discount tickets for the game at Shea to all members. Chelly said she was interested, so we got two tickets. It was gorgeous, if a bit warm day. The Mets were playing the Philadelphia Phillies, which makes for an interesting crowd. Phillies fans will come up th NYC to see the game and the section we occupied seemed to be surrounded by Philly fans. Fortunately, the powers that be at the stadium are stricter with the alcohol than they were when I was a kid and there were no fist fights. The Mets won in a fast game that had its moments. I was hoarse afterwards from screaming

Chelly made a point of purchasing all the traditional foodstuffs at the game - hotdogs, crackerjacks and cold beer. I saved money by eating lunch before I got to the park and was quite happy with my decision. Concession food has always been expensive, but in the years since I've been some of it has gotten ridiculous. $4.25 for a bag of Cracker Jacks or a bottle of water? That's like four times what they cost outside. Not everything was quite that bad, but those two items, in particular, just blew me away.

This was my first weekend back running. While I was actually allowed to start running on Monday, it was so hot that I just didn't feel like going outside. I did a four mile run on Saturday with the club. Started out slow, first mile was 11:30 pace. I went a little faster with each mile and did the last mile in 9:30. It didn't feel too bad. I'm noticing a twinge in my right knee that wasn't there before the operation. I might just go and check out some new shoes soon. I've been wearing motion control shoes since last year (Asics Evolution) but I was heavier than and had only been running for a few months. I might not need so much shoe at this point. Or maybe I'm wrong. Either way, Asic has stopped making that model, so I'd have to switch anyway.

Sunday I went to the park to run with the club again. I was planning another four mile run. Well, that didn't happen. I started out feeling kind of tired, which was not unexpected since I had run the day before. But I ended up turning around at only 1.75 miles and walking after only about two miles. Looking at the stats afterwards, I was probably running a bit too fast, but at the time I was really disappointed with myself. My head knows that I have to give it a little time, but there is a little voice inside me telling me that I'm never going to be any good again. Totally ridiculous, I know, but I can't stop it. I was running easily before the enforced break. I did a ten mile run, I had my 5k race pace approaching 8:00, the idea of a 10k wasn't in the least intimidating. Now, I'm doubting my ability to run that far again. No one has to tell me that I'm wrong, but I just need to convince myself.

    yay for running!

you know what? I'm shocked at how fitness I seemed to have lost from this surgery! Measly 3.5 miles and I'm whipped. Oh well, it'll come back.
